Between 1890 and 1930, more houses were built in the united states than it all its previous history. Between 1948 and 1958 over thirteen million homes were built alone. Perhaps it was inevitability - the country's population was increasing in record numbers.

The suburbs, once thought to be the modern Utopia, were paving over prime agricultural land in increasing numbers. Roads were constructed, driveways and garages were designed for not one but two cars. Suddenly, anyone could own a home. From the Sears Modern homes at the turn of the century to the pre-fabs of today, even middle income Americans could afford a second home. The American Dream is born.
