| The
commercial forces that motivate and realize design
have not received adequate critical attention. The
social and cultural patterns that emerge and the degree
of influence that these practices have on the formal
aspects of design will be considered within this context.
The exhibition will examine both sides involved in
the exchange of goods: production (manufacturing, technology,
and advertising) and consumption (merchandising and
selling), as well as the three critical sites of engagement
in the process of design: the relationships of the
designer and manufacturer, the manufacturer and retailer,
and the retailer and consumer.
The
exhibition will explore the ideal of Democratic
Design within five themes:
Architecture
Transportation
Communication
Products
Culture
